Frequently Asked Questions

Domain Registration

1) What is a domain name?
A domain name is the name used to identify your Internet Systems (eg: web site and email) for example: nuclearinternet.com is our domain name.

2) How long is my does my domain registration last?
We register all domains for a period of 2 years, though you can extend your registration by an additional 2 years at any time

3) I already have my domain registered with another provider, can you still host my site?
Yes of course, just order a hosting plan and follow this guide.

4) My domain name is registered with another provider, can you renew my domain name for me?
Yes, provided the domain name has not already expired, is not in the last 30 days or the first 60 days of its registration period. This is called a domain transfer, contact us for details.

5) Who owns my domain name?
All domains are registered in the client's name, this makes you the legal owner of your domain name.

6) What happens if I forget to renew my domain name?
Well we will send you reminder that your domain is due for renewal during the last 60 days of your registration period. However, if you allow your domain to expire, there is a £150 reactivation fee plus the renewal costs. So keep your contact information up to date and don't ignore the reminders.

Web Hosting Questions

1) What is Shared Hosting?
Shared Hosting, often simply refered to as Web Hosting is when your web site is stored on a web server along with other web sites and various web sites share the server's resources. Compare this with Dedicated Hosting when a single web site/company can have the entire server's resrouces at its disposal.

2) What's this 2 for 1 Offer all about?
For a limited time we're offering 2 hosting plans for the price of one. With each Windows Web Hosting Plan you order, you'll get a second plan free for one year. At the end of the year if you are using your free account you'll be invited to renew it, but there is no obligation and you can cancel it at any time.

3) Do you provide a Moneyback Guarantee?
Yes, we offer a full 15 day money back guarantee. If for any reason you are disatisfied with the level of service you receive you can cancel your account within 15 days and request a full refund. (NB: subject to our acceptable use policy and bandwidth restrictions. Money Back Guarantee applies only to Windows Starter and Windows Advanced Hosting plans.)

4) Why Choose a UK Web Host?
If you are a UK company or if your web site targets British Consumers then hosting your site with a UK web host will give your web site a boost in the UK search engines which use geo-targetting like Google.co.uk. Our Servers are also configured with UK Date, number and currency formats, which is important for Scripting and Databases.

5) I already have my domain registered with another provider, can you still host my site?
Yes of course, just order a hosting plan and follow this guide. We'll even honour the time remaining with your exisiting host (up to 6 months) and help you move your web site.

6) Can I test my site on a preview url before I transfer my site to you?
Yes, of course, just request a preview url from our support team.

7) Can I install my own programs or COM objects with my hosting plan?
Not with our shared hosting plans, you can however install your own programs if you order your own dedicated server.

8) Why do you use Windows Servers and Not Linux?
Personal preference mostly, but also that Open Source technologies usually found on Linux (eg: Perl, MySQL and PHP,) are portable to Windows, but Windows technologies such as ASP and Access are not portable to Linux. Basically by opting for Windows Servers, we can support a broader range of web sites.

9) But isn't Linux more secure than Windows?
No, actually both Operating Systems are considered equally secure. Our servers are configured with Internet Security in mind, and are continuous updated with the latest security fixes and service packs. We also have an industry strength firewall, and corporate level Antivirus protecting our network.

10) Do you support FrontPage Server Extensions?
Yes our Windows Advanced plan and Reseller Hosting Plan include support for FrontPage Server Extensions.

11) Can I create MySQL Databases?
Yes our Windows Advanced and Reseller Hosting Plan include optional MySQL Databases.

12) How do I set-up my e-mail account in Outlook/Outlook Express/Thunderbird?
Visit our Knowledge base there are comprehensive guides available to download.

13) Do you provide a Web Mail Service?
Yes, it can be found at: http://mail.nuclearinternet.com

14) What is Reseller Hosting?
Reseller Hosting is aimed at Web Designers and Developers who publish a large number of web sites and/or wish to provide web hosting services to their clients. Reseller Hosting grants you a large amount of server resources to divide up as you see fit between upto 40 web sites. You can then create your own web hosting plans and sell them to your customers at a profit.

Technical Questions

1) Where are your servers located?
In the Server House Data Centre near Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. See Our Network page for full details. (Did you know sites hosted in the UK are given a boost in Google.co.uk rankings?)

2) What Hardware do you use?
We use Dell PowerEdge P1850 Servers with Xeon Processors and Cisco Network Equipment.

3) How often do you back-up your servers?
Our servers run mirrored hard disks so data is backed-up to a second hard disk instantaneously. We also have an automated Weekly Tape back-up which copies the data on our servers to remote storage.

4) How much bandwidth (data transfer) will I need?
It depends on the size of your web pages and the number of visitors you receive each month. Typically 5GB of data transfer would be ample for 17,500 - 20,000 visitor sessions. (nb: don't confuse visitor sessions with hits or page views.)

5) How can I secure my web site with SSL?
Simple, just Order an SSL Certificate for your site, if your site is hosted with us, we'll install and configure it for free.

6) How many web sites do you store on each server?
A maximum of 500. We don't believe in overloading our servers with thousands of web sites as it reduces performance.

Billing Questions

1) How do you Invoice for your services?
All accounts are prepaid, we'll issue a receipt at the time of order, renewals are invoiced 15-30 days prior to the expiry of your account.

2) What payment methods do you accept?
Credit Cards (via Pay Pal), bank transfers and cheques.

3) Can I pay in arrears?
No, all Accounts are pre-paid, there are no exceptions. Late payment can result in account suspension and/or services (eg: domain names) not being renewed.

4) Why is there no VAT amount shown on my invoice?
Our prices are all-inclusive as we are not VAT registered.
